The Elham Arts Festival
Date: 13/05 - 16/05
  Venue: Qal’at Al-Bahrain Museum

WHAT? The Elham Arts Festival, to be held from the 13th to the 16th of May, promises to be a fitting finale to the third season of Elham with a host of cultural activities lined up. Ali Al Saeed, one of the founding members of Elham, revealed that the group “organised Live Art last year during which we had events for three days over the Formula 1 weekend. Its success encouraged us to organise an even bigger festival this year with events like art exhibitions and workshops, poetry recitals and book readings, photography, music concerts, film screenings and filmmaking workshops. Our key themes have always been to engage, interact and create. Through this festival, we try to create a dialogue between various artistic media to facilitate creative efforts towards achieving greater cultural understanding.” The festival has been organised in association with the Qal’at Al Bahrain Museum which was officially opened last year. Most of the artistes taking part in the festival are based in Bahrain.

Exhibition by Firyal Al Adhamy

Date: 9 May
Venue: Bin Mattar House, Muharraq

WHAT? Firyal was born in Baghdad, and graduated from Baghdad University. Her work is inspired by the rich cultural history of Iraq and the Arab world. She grew up in an environment of traditional craftsmanship. From an early age she witnessed the process behind the traditional crafts of jewellery and costume, textiles and woodwork. Al-Adhamy’s objects of study are varied, although her single aim is to observe and faithfully replicate the object, thereby documenting and preserving it for posterity. Minute precision and attention to detail are characteristic of Al Adhamy’s work. Her seventh solo exhibition, entitled “When the Word Turns into a Fragrant Ray of Light”, is a new experience for Al Adhamy in her use of acrylic with mixed media and ceramic or wood on canvas.

To be held at the Bahrain National Museum at the beginning of May 2009 under the patronage of Her Highness Shaikha Lulwa bint Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, daughter of His Highness the Prime Minister, Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the exhibition promises to herald a new era in Franco-Bahraini ties.

strokes. I am enthusiastic about organising a collaboration of Bahrain and French art exhibits, where each will gain an insight into the other. From our side, we have included some artists whose selection was based on their works exhibited at the Annual Exhibition. They include Abdul Karim Al Bosta, Ahmed Al Orifi, Shafeeqa Al Harmi, Nasreen Jawad, myself, Ella Parkash and Ebrahim Shuqair as Bahraini’s artists. The French artists include Yves Cass, Ioana, Luis Rodriguez and Bruno Lemoine. It was a joyful and challenging job to coordinate the schedules of all the artists but we managed.” Shaikha Fajer believes that Bahrainis are instinctively attuned to art and understand and appreciate it. The exhibition will provide motivation for more local artists to stand with their French counterparts and celebrate the creativity of art. Part of the proceeds of the exhibition will go to Al Noor Charity, therefore individuals and corporations alike are being urged to support this unique initiative.

Sapho sings um kalthum

Date: 21 May
Venue: Golden Tulip Hotel

WHAT? If you are looking for a night of hauntingly beautiful music which transports you to a whole new level, then be sure to book your place at the live concert by French Singer Sapho at the Golden Tulip Hotel. Originally from Morocco, Sapho has mesmerised fans all across the globe with her stunning and powerful voice. Her career, which spans over 20 years, is a complex mix of theatre (her first focus as a student) – which translates into dramatic scenic performances during her concerts; of music – she has long left the punk-rock movement to incorporate world music from her native Morocco, Egypt and Mexico; of literature – in addition to writing her own lyrics, she has also written a couple of novels; and of political and social engagement – against poverty, in favour of human, and particularly women’s rights, and foremost during the past few years for the reconciliation of Israel and Palestine. She started her career in rock music but later concentrated on her North African roots, singing tunes by Um Kalthum and working together with Pat Jabbar and the Orchestre de Nazareth. Maybe you were among the lucky few who enjoyed Sapho’s concert at la fontaine two years ago?
